In Sheep’s Clothing 10.11 is the eleventh chapter of In Sheep’s Clothing. Sy and Mary coerce the Baron's scientists into making theme drugs and a decoy firstborn before the wedding guests arrive.

Plot[edit]

Sy talks to Evette, and passes it off as warning Clifton not to blow up the lab. He thinks about her shifting appearance, how it draws on what he remembers about vat babies because of Helen and Ashton.

Carmen makes enough noise to wake Mary; apologises profusely at gunpoint. Mary worries that she was sleeping, and then more that Sy hasn't. He reassures her about it in a way that puts the focus back on her; she catches that he's pulling something but not what.

Simon finishes the Wyvern formula. Sy tests him by asking him to give it to either Carmen or Clifton, and Simon asking one of them to volunteer satisfies him that the formula is genuine.

Sy asks how the projects are coming along. Clifton says "an hour", Carmen's freaking out and they talk about how firstborn are made and programmed. While explaining that the people the Baron takes are usually quiet, Simon calls the villagers scrapings from the bottoms of the filthiest barrels. Sy says that that's what the scientists are, then demands one of them play firstborn. Simon realises that Clifton has delayed on purpose, but still gets the job—and Sy gets an eye from Clifton.

Sylvester, Mary, and their 'born head out, Sy noticing how strange it is to have two functional eyes again. They find their clothes and get changed; Mary didn't expect a job, so she only has the twenty knives she normally wears. Mary tells Sy she's still mad at him about Lillian, that the important thing is if she's happy. Sy tries to not let on that nothing he's about to do will make Lillian happy.

A train whistles. Simon's surprised because it's off schedule when they're normally very regular. It's the guests, arriving for the wedding. Guests with their security, more people between them and the Baron. And, possibly, Mauer or Fray.
