Taking Root 1.1 is the first chapter of Taking Root.

Plot

The story opens in medias res, as our main characters avoid detection from a snake-like creature. Helen volunteers to stay as the rest of the cast leaves the building. Outside, they meet with Jamie and an orphan named Thomas. Sylvester pays Thomas to tip a rain barrel onto a black coach later in the day.

They enter into a different part of the building, the laboratory, where the group is caught by the Snake Charmer. A scuffle ensues and the Snake Charmer is left to be eaten by his creation. Sylvester intentionally gets burned by enzymes.

Trivia

• Enzymes can 'burn', anyone who has eaten a pineapple and had a raw mouth afterward has experienced this effect.
