The Black Wood is a weapon of last resort used by the Crown Empire to destroy dangerous organisms and render entire continents uninhabitable; lying fallow for later colonization.

It is a deadly variant of Builder's Wood.<ref>"Black wood, [...] Builder’s wood,” the Treasurer said. “But it’s meant to contain and disrupt something like a self-propagating lifeform. They’ll probably burn a circle to control its progress.”
